Go wild for The 2.6 Challenge!
Durrell, like so many charities, has been severely impacted by COVID-19. The Trust relies on the support of their visitors, members, donors and adopters to continue their work to create a wilder, healthier, more colourful world for us all. With the closure of Jersey Zoo and the Durrell Charity Shop, as well as Durrell’s fundraising events having to be cancelled or postponed, the charity’s income for 2020 will be significantly reduced.
To help the charity through this challenging time Durrell is calling on all its supporters around the world to get creative and come up with their own ‘wild’ fundraising idea as part of The 2.6 Challenge.
Take on The 2.6 Challenge for Durrell
This national fundraising campaign has been spearheaded by the organisers of the Virgin Money London Marathon which was due to take place on Sunday 26 April 2020 and is the world’s largest one-day fundraising event and raised more than £66.4 million for charities in 2019. As it cannot go ahead as planned, its organisers have created The 2.6 Challenge as a ‘lockdown-friendly event’, which is easy for anyone to join in and make a difference. Hundreds of UK based charities are taking part as well as some Jersey charities, including Macmillan Jersey and Jersey Hospice Care.
For this exciting global event, Durrell is encouraging people to GO WILD and take on an activity based around the number 2.6 or 26 and donate or fundraise for the Trust. The 2.6 Challenge is open to anyone of any age, the only requirement is that the activity must follow the Government’s guidelines on exercise and social distancing.

Durrell has been delighted by the fantastic ideas that their supporters have come up with to raise funds, including:
- Durrell ambassador Milo Parker, who plays young Gerry in ‘The Durrells’, has pledged his support by cycling 2.6 miles
- Illustrator Pippa Pixley is hosting an animal-themed drawing working shop
- Amateur artist and conservationist Abigail Leach is painting an endangered species for every letter of the alphabet and giving them to people who donate
- Durrell Fundraising Manager Beth Gallichan will be sharing her love of charity shops with 26 outfit changes in 26 minutes
- The Jersey Gorilla will be shortly announcing his own special challenge
From 26 minutes of animal-themed yoga to reading 26 pages from Gerald Durrell’s books, there are so many different ways you can get involved in the challenge.
Durrell’s Fundraising Manager, Beth Gallichan, said: “This is a really difficult time for charities, both big and small, that are struggling to fill the void of cancelled fundraising events. The 2.6 Challenge is a collaborative campaign that enables us to reach out to our supporters and invite them to have fun, be creative and help raise funds. This will be a national appeal with many famous faces taking part to inspire others to take part or donate.”
Durrell’s work protecting wild spaces and saving wildlife has never been more vital and the team has been so moved by the kindness of members of the public who have sent in messages of support and donations to help towards the care of the animals whilst the zoo is closed to visitors. The charity hopes that many of their members and supporters will join in and take on The 2.6 Challenge on Sunday 26th April 2020.
