Durrell asks schools and artists to ‘go wild’ for gorillas
Following the launch of Durrell’s major community project for 2019, Go Wild Gorillas, artists and schools are invited to take part in a collaborative, community-orientated, public art project and showcase their creativity. The Island-wide art trail is anticipated to be the highlight of next year’s creative and cultural calendar.
Go Wild Gorillas is an art trail, in partnership with Wild in Art, consisting of brightly coloured, artist imagined, life-size gorilla sculptures, which will be placed across Jersey and will lead people on a trail of discovery, not only to see the gorillas themselves, but the nature in which they are placed.
Submissions are now open for local and international artists to submit their designs for the gorilla sculptures. Designs will be shortlisted by a panel of local art experts and the selected artworks will then be presented to the event sponsors, who will choose their favourite design for their gorilla. Commissioned artists will receive an honorarium of £850. The closing date for entries is 6th January 2019.
All schools are encouraged to get involved in this exciting new project. The Go Wild Gorillas Creative Learning Programme is open to all of Jersey’s primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and community groups. Educators, whether they are teachers, volunteer youth coordinators, PTA governors or members, are invited to join us at our new butterfly house on Wednesday 28th November to hear about our ambitious plans for the Creative Learning Programme and to be inspired by the potential of this rich, community engagement project.
Tom Dingle explained why Art House Jersey are supporting the project. “As an arts organisation, we’re delighted to offer our support to Durrell’s new project. ‘Go Wild Gorillas’ provides artists with commissioned opportunities and establishes an ongoing relationship with patrons and the corporate community. To be able to reap all of the benefits that art can offer our community we must find ways to support the people behind the art, and this initiative does just that.”
For artists, whether well-known, emerging or as yet, undiscovered, this is their opportunity to take part in the biggest ever, mass participation, public art event across the Channel Islands. Successful artists will be commissioned to customise a gorilla sculpture, which will act as a showcase for their artwork, attracting tourists and local residents to discover the wonderful world of conservation through the visual arts.
For schools, this is the chance to learn about conservation and experience the importance of creativity, through adopting and designing their own smaller ‘young gorilla’ sculpture, whilst engaging in an Island-wide programme, learning all about gorillas and the work at Durrell.
For businesses, this is a unique and innovative opportunity to promote their company and drive customers to their door, whilst supporting a much-loved local charity.
Our event partner, Wild in Art, is an expert in the creation of mass participation art trails. By bringing artists, businesses, schools and communities together, Go Wild Gorillas will generate momentum and support to achieve our aim to create a wilder, healthier and more colourful world for future generations.
