We are incredibly sad to announce that Anette, affectionately as Nettie passed away on Monday 21 September.

Nettie was a beloved part of the zoo family for 15 years and will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

As an older Sumatran orangutan, she had several age-related health concerns. In recent years, she received bespoke geriatric care, including regular medication and supplements, to keep her as comfortable as possible.

We saw a significant decline in her general wellbeing, so following a thorough review process, we made the difficult decision to put her to sleep.

The beautiful Nettie will be greatly missed by our staff, visitors and volunteers.

Born at Tierpark Berlin in Germany in 1983, Nettie moved to Duisburg Zoo before arriving at Jersey Zoo in 2011 as part of the European breeding programme.

After being introduced to Dagu, the pair bred successfully and welcomed Jantho in 2013. Despite being partially hand-reared herself, Nettie proved to be a doting mother, if a little laid back at times.

Nettie was very popular with visitors and staff. She could often be seen keeping a close eye on public viewing areas or any work taking place nearby, taking her supervisory duties very seriously.
