The Durrell Challenge returns for 2021

Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is delighted to launch the Durrell Challenge 2021. This popular event, kindly sponsored by Butterfield, includes a 13K race in Jersey and a virtual 13K run, allowing runners across the globe to get involved and take on the challenge closer to home. Together with Durrell Ambassador Henry Cavill, Durrell Challenge runners support the charity’s vital work protecting some of the most threatened wildlife on the planet.

The 13K road race from Victoria Park to Jersey Zoo will take place on Sunday 23 May. Due to the current restrictions in place for both international travel and events, the road race will once again only be open to Jersey residents. The Virtual Durrell Challenge will take place again this year from Friday 21 to Monday 24 May. Event organisers are encouraging runners of all abilities, wherever they are in the world, to take part and help raise funds for the charity’s work saving species from extinction.

Dr Lesley Dickie, CEO of Durrell, said, “This exciting annual event supports our work recovering wildlife, reviving ecosystems and reconnecting people to nature. Over the last three years, the incredible fundraising efforts of Durrell Challenge runners have helped to raise over £200,000 for our work saving species. Our supporters have made great progress possible, but we still need your help to continue our work as the world’s animals and their habitats face constant threat. We are so grateful to all our amazing supporters across the globe for taking part in the race, and to our loyal sponsor, Butterfield, for their continued support throughout this difficult time.”

Noel McLaughlin, Managing Director at Butterfield Bank (Jersey) Limited, said, “We’re excited to support the Durrell Challenge for the third year running. Last year’s virtual event was so successful that we’re pleased to see it return this year in the same format, giving people around the world the ability to take part.

“The option for virtual participation means more people can join in, which will provide a great opportunity for more funds to be raised for Durrell's conservation work, which is crucial in these uncertain and challenging times." Set yourself a New Year goal! Sign up before the end of February to take advantage of the early bird rate. Runners are encouraged to set up their own fundraising page via JustGiving or donate to support Durrell’s vital conservation efforts.

The 13K road race on 23 May 2021 is subject to the Bailiff’s Chambers permit and the event complying with the Government of Jersey’s events policy that is in place on the date of the race. If the event is forced to be cancelled, local runners will be automatically transferred to the 13K Virtual Run and receive a £10 discount on entry for the Durrell Challenge 2022.
