I have recently celebrated my first year anniversary as a Volunteer at the Organic Farm. The year has brought me great memories, new knowledge, appreciation, friendships with fellow volunteers and enthusiastic staff, and of course a great insight into the animal world. Durrell to me is a place of happiness and hope.
I am very proud and increasingly excited at the opportunity afforded me as it enables me to engage with visitors from as far away as Australia and our neighbours in the uk and from Germany and France. I find I have been motivated as being part of a team, and in my own small way contributing to the ongoing fight of protection of species.
Volunteering at Durrell is important to me because it is somewhere I have been visiting since I was little and I really believe in the work to protect the animals here in Jersey and abroad. Everyone I have met whilst volunteering at Durrell has been really easy to chat to and work with. They genuinely enjoy the work that they do which is easy to tell from even a short conversation. I am proud to volunteer for Durrell as I have met some fantastic people and animals, I enjoy going each morning and I am helping to promote and support an important Jersey charity.
The conservation world was something I had always thought I had supported, but I had no idea of the many facets of this subject. I am now more aware of, and more engaged in, the impacts of climate change, sustainability, recycling, ethical living, and conserving the world in which we live. My lifestyle has changed as a result. Why do I volunteer at Durrell? I am extremely lucky to be part of the team – and feel ‘I belong’. I am lucky to be part of an organisation where I feel valued and quite simply, I feel that in a small way, I am making a difference to the world.
Durrell has lifted me out of my depression; it’s great to be amongst people who care. Durrell Staff are dedicated to saving species. Durrell is a great place to be, you meet many people from all walks of life who come and go. You meet many inspiring people and make friends you couldn't ask for a better place to volunteer.
I have been a volunteer with Durrell for 8 years now and love it. The people at Durrell put their hearts into what they do and take great care and love in looking after all the animals there which is fantastic. I get a great achievement from being a volunteer, it makes me feel I have done something good for the planet as I don’t want any of these animals/species to become extinct because of mankind.
Everyone at Durrell loves all the animals, we are dedicated to their care and wellbeing. I have always had a membership to Durrell and am overjoyed to be part of large team of volunteers who care as I do about Conservation.
