Durrell Endangered Species Management Graduate Certificate 2012

The Durrell Endangered Species Management Graduate Certificate (DESMAN) is a 12-week course designed to equip conservationists with the skills needed to manage species recovery. The course is accredited by the University of Kent.

Who is it for?

The Graduate Certificate is designed for people working in conservation, either in the field or in captive breeding facilities.

What is the course content?

The course is composed of the following, six-week modules:
Module 1: Application of conservation biology theory
Module 2: Transferable skills for conservation managers

Module 1 consists of a four week lecture and seminar series and a two week block working on the animal and veterinary departments in Durrell. Module 2 is composed of practical workshops on topics such as GIS, statistics and data analysis and population monitoring techniques. As a DESMAN participant you will also attend the Facilitation Skills for Conservation Managers and the Leadership and Communication Skills courses (see later section).

Assessments include written exams, project and fund-raising proposals, data manipulation activities and presentations.

How will you benefit?

The course is designed to develop the skills required to plan, manage and execute a successful conservation project. Trainees have the opportunity to work closely with Durrell staff and develop professional networks. In addition to learning from our expert staff at Durrell, guest lecturers from world class conservation organisations and learning intitutions will contribute to the course. 

Where will the course be run?

The course is run at the ITC at Durrell's headquarters in Jersey.

How much will it cost?

The course fee is £9000. This fee includes full board accommodation at Les Noyers throughout the 12 weeks as well as a weekly stipend to cover additional living expenses. A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available.
