The Avian egg incubation workshop is a four day practical workshop designed to give participants the skills required to successfully incubate bird eggs and deal with problems that could arise. 

 

 

What is the course content?

The workshop will cover the following:

  • Embryo and membrane development
  • Factors affecting hatchability before and during incubation
  • Hatchery management techniques
  • Artificial incubation and it's role in field conservation programmes

 

Who will lead the course?

 The course is being run by Susie Kasielke, curator of birds at the Los Angeles Zoo, and Pat Witman, from San Diego Zoo. There will also be additional lectures from Durrell's bird department and Prof. Carl Jones MBE.


How will you benefit?

 Participants will break out embryos at all stages of development (older embryos are euthanised first) and gain first hand experience of candling techniques, egg repair, hatching assistance and egg necropsy. 

Where will the course be run?

 The course will be held at the ITC at Durrell's Jersey headquarters.

How much will it cost?

The course will cost £500 which includes lunches and refreshments (discounted to £400 if paid at least 8 weeks in advance). Optional full-board on-site accommodation can be provided at an additional cost of £35 per night.
