We are celebrating 25 years of saving species and supporting communities to manage natural resources sustainably in Madagascar.
Madagascar is the heart of Durrell’s conservation programme; it is an island with unique, wondrous and sometimes bizarre species of animal and plant. But Madagascar is also one of the poorest countries in the world. Most of the population rely on the natural world for survival and the iconic species have become restricted to tiny remaining patches of habitat.
We have dedicated the last 25 years to saving some of Madagascar’s iconic species, such as the ploughshare tortoise, and working with local communities to find ways of protecting the natural resources on which they rely.
Here you will find out how we are celebrating our anniversary. During the year we will focus on different aspects of our work. You will get to meet the people who make our projects happen and hear some of their stories. We will also bring you news and updates of events and project achievements as they happen.
While we look back on 25 years of challenges and achievements in Madagascar, we also look forward to what the next 25 years will hold both for the country, its people and its wildlife.
