On 1st December Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust will host a gala reception and charity auction at BAFTA. The aim of the prestigious event is to raise funds for the international conservation charity established more than fifty years ago by the author and naturalist Gerald Durrell to save species from extinction.

A rare boxed set of seventeen vintage photographs of Frank Sinatra by the legendary British photographer Terry O'Neill will head up a fine array of art in this year’s auction, sponsored by Santander Private Banking.

Colin Huelin, Managing Director, Santander Private Banking in Jersey said “Durrell is an international charity working globally towards saving species from extinction and it plays a vital role in worldwide environmental conservation. Funds raised at the auction will help Durrell to continue this work, so we are delighted to be able to support this most worthwhile event. Santander Private Banking in Jersey is committed to environmental conservation and we are looking forward to working on this and other projects with our charity partner Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust”.

Terry O'Neill has photographed the frontline of fame for more than six decades but there are only two sets of the original 10 x 12 silver gelatin publicity prints of Sinatra: Night & Day in the world. The collection is a visual piece of history, telling the story of Sinatra's work on the set of The Lady In Cement in Miami Beach with Raquel Welch in 1968 by day – and in cabaret at the Fontainebleu at night. It is expected to reach in excess of £25,000.

The auction will be held at 7.45pm at BAFTA in Piccadilly on Thursday 1st December 2011 This will be the second London art auction organised by Durrell to raise funds to save the most threatened species in the most threatened places around the world.

As well as the Sinatra collection, the auction features a number of Terry O’Neill’s photographs including a boxed set of Brigitte Bardot photographs with an estimated value of £17,000. But there will be sculpture and paintings too, as this year’s auction features pieces by the internationally recognized master sculptor of the animal in motion Mark Coreth, Dame Maggi Hambling, whose well known memorial to Oscar Wilde is located in Central London, Nick Day who is one of Britain’s most renowned wildlife artists, Nicola Hicks, one of Britain's foremost sculptors and Oliver Clegg, singled out by the British press as a ’rising star’ of the London contemporary arts scene.

Durrell is fortunate to have secured the services of Jonathan Horwich, Global Director of Picture Sales at Bonhams, as the event auctioneer. Jonathan‘s experience and expertise guarantee a wonderful evening. Estimated values of the art on offer range from just a few hundred pounds to £25,000 allowing everyone the opportunity to buy something to suit their budget and help save species from extinction.
