Durrell’s race against the clock to record native species

8th June 2010

BioBlitz

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and to celebrate this Durrell in conjunction with BBC’s ‘Wild Days Out’ and the States of Jersey has arranged a 24 hour ‘BioBlitz.’

From 6pm this Friday experts, volunteers, school children and members of the public will begin a race against time to count as many species of plants and animals within Durrell’s wildlife park as possible – all in just 24 hours.

Durrell’s BioBlitz launches with a search for bats, moths and small mammals on Friday evening and continues through to Saturday with early morning bird walks, butterfly and wildflower walks, pond-dipping and insect hunts.

Naomi Webster, Durrell’s Education and Interpretation Officer said “This is hands-on fun, interactive science and a great event for the whole family. Whether you come for an hour or stay for the whole day, your help will be invaluable as we identify species and learn a bit more about the remarkable animals and plants which share our island.”

A full programme of activities is planned throughout the 24 hour period all of which will be supervised by Durrell staff and local experts will be on hand to help educate and inform participants about the importance of biodiversity on Jersey.
