Carbon offset benefits

Carbon sequestration benefits:
When you buy a Durrell carbon offset, our partners in Brazil will plant trees to mitigate your CO2 emissions. For every hectare of rainforest that is planted, our partners have calculated that 318 tonnes of CO2 will be sequestered. The trees, which are planted in the Pontal do Paranapanema region of São Paulo state are guaranteed for at least 30 years and for every tonne of Durrell carbon offsets sold, between 5 and 6 trees are planted.

Reforestation and habitat creation:
The trees create corridors that link together the remaining fragments of Brazil’s once majestic Atlantic Rainforest. These corridors are used by wildlife to travel between the remaining forest pockets enabling them to extend their ranges, meet other populations and extend genetic diversity.

Dozens of species will benefit from the tree-planting, including: Pumas, tapirs, peccaries, opossums, armadillos and tamarins.

Local community benefits:
Virtually all the forest that once covered the Pontal do Paranapanema region has been cleared to make way for agriculture and cattle ranching. Until recently, large farms dominated the landscape, but over the last 20 years, these have gradually given way to smaller settlements, as government agrarian reforms have broken up vast landholdings.

Generally, new settlers lack the tools and expertise to realize the soil’s full productive potential, making it difficult to earn a living from agriculture on small parcels of land. This project will restore cleared and degraded areas to forest and will promote urgently needed models for rural development that allow the coexistence of forests and agriculture. Without the project, settlers will continue using unsustainable methods to work the land, obtaining low yields and preventing the forest from ever regenerating.

Durrell & ECO-ACTIVE

The scheme which is aimed at both businesses and individuals is being run by Durrell in partnership with ECO-ACTIVE, the States of Jersey’s community environmental initiative. Senator Freddie Cohen, Ex-Minister for Planning and the Environment, said: "Islanders have shown their earnest desire to respond to the issues of climate change in a practical way. The Council of Ministers and myself wholeheartedly endorse the Durrell ECO-ACTIVE carbon offset scheme to benefit the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest and the States of Jersey will be taking a lead and using the scheme to off-set carbon arising from business travel. I urge all environmentally conscious Islanders to give consideration to supporting this worthy initiative."
