training facilities

Durrell’s conservation training programme is based at the International Training Centre (ITC) located within Durrell’s Jersey headquarters.

The International Training Centre has purpose-built learning facilities including a 50-seat lecture theatre, kindly funded by the Hastings Foundation, a reference library containing over 10,000 elecronically catalogued items, with subscriptions to over 60 journals; and a fully web-enabled IT facility with access to video workshops and staff offices.

In 1990, the Whitley Animal Protection Trust generously endowed the International Training Centre with a donation of £1 million. Income from this endowment is used annually to help with the ongoing costs of running the Centre, as well as providing several scholarships to enable conservationists from developing countries to travel to Jersey for training.

Adjoining the technical wing of the ITC facility is the students’ residential area, comprising ten spacious study bedrooms; a communal kitchen and comfortable sitting room with TV and video facilities. In the summer, students also have access to the garden area where they can soak up a little of Jersey’s sunshine! The ITC has a full-time housekeeper who provides all meals during the week.
