As an international conservation organisation, Durrell is committed to preserving the future of endangered species. An incredibly important part of this work is raising awareness and educating the next generation on the importance of conservation, wildlife awareness and the environment.
Based at our Jersey headquarters, Durrell’s Conservation Education Department provide education for primary school pupils to A’Level students. College and University students educational needs are catered for by our ITC department.
Durrell’s Education department covers both formal (schools) and informal (visitors and members) activities and lessons.
Many of the topics taught are science based, although these can be modified accordingly. However, other subjects can be taught.
Workshops can be organised covering a variety of topics. These can be arranged to cover aspects of badges, if desired, or the workshops can be just for fun:
It is possible to have a workshop that allows the children to design a food parcel for an animal here at Durrell, and then to see it being fed to the animal.
Workshops on enclosure design, asking the students to consider the needs of a particular animal and then create a model of their enclosure, are also popular.
