After a rigorous judging process the winners are now announced for the Lombard Odier Bug Habitat Competition, run by Durrell’s education team. A prize giving for all the winners took place 12th March at Durrell’s headquarters in Trinity.

Almost 800 12 & 13 year old pupils from Le Rocquier, Haute Vallee, Grainville and Les Quennavais submitted over 50 group entries. These entries were broken down into 5 categories; Overall Winner, Best Technical Research, Best Use of Research and Best Presentation. The winners from each of these categories attended with family and friends to accept several prizes.

All the pupils involved visited Durrell over autumn term last year to learn about bio-diversity and the importance of creatures great and small. They were challenged to design an enclosure for leaf-cutter ants, which could be placed in Durrell’s Cloud Forest exhibit. The ants are usually found in South America’s rainforest and provide an important role within that eco-system.

Lombard Odier Darrier Hentsch (Jersey) Limited has been working in partnership with Durrell for the past few years, encouraging knowledge about conservation through education.

Jo Ward, Durrell’s Education officer said ‘The bug house competition was an exciting new venture for Durrell’s education team. The project brought together team building activities to help the children bond, as well as encouraging awareness about conservation and biodiversity.’

Durrell would like to thank Lombard Odier for their continuing support.
