Islanders' memories sought for Durrell's biggest party

Islanders' memories of Durrell are being sought as part of the biggest party the Trust has ever held at the Jersey headquarters, thanks to help from Jersey Tourism and Appleby. The Trust will be throwing open the doors for free next month, welcoming everyone to celebrate Durrell's 50th anniversary year.

Durrell Day, on Sunday 12th July, is set to be one of the highlights of the summer, as the Trust looks to thank Jersey residents for the passionate support they have given over the past 50 years, which has enabled Durrell to continue working to save species from extinction.

The wildlife park will be divided into four zones for the day: Durrell in Jersey, Memory, Conservation and Corfu Zones, where visitors will be able to enjoy a range of experiences and activities, as well as the wide variety of animals and stunning grounds.

The public are being asked to contribute their memories and fondest moments from the last fifty years that will, once collected, make up the Memory Zone display in the Princess Royal Pavilion. After Durrell Day, fifty items of special significance from the exhibition will be collated and sealed in a time capsule to be buried in the new Walled Garden development in early September.

Elsewhere on the site, exciting activities for the day include den building, a Genuine Jersey fair, walks and talks with Durrell experts and Greek themed food and drink in celebration of Gerald Durrell’s childhood home, Corfu.

Paul Masterton, CEO of Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: “Islanders have always been the first line of support for Durrell and we’re proud to be able to thank all members of our community by opening up the wildlife park, for free, on Durrell Day. I’m sure that everyone will have a fantastic time.”

Michael O’Connell, Managing Partner of Appleby in Jersey added: “We are very pleased to be able to offer our support to Durrell in this way. We hope that the 12th July will be a great success and the local community will join us in celebrating this momentous occasion."

David de Carteret of Jersey Tourism, said: “Durrell has provided a quality experience which has attracted thousands of national and international visitors to Jersey for half a century and we are delighted to be working with the Trust to celebrate their achievements on Durrell Day.”
