Durrell was delighted to welcome a group of fifty French school-children recently, who had been busy raising money for the Trust in their spare time.

Their biology teacher, Jacquie Helie, is a big fan of the Trust and has spent several summers volunteering here in Jersey, and organised numerous trips for her classes from Lycée Collège Germain in Coutance, Normandy.

Durrell's Honorary Director, Lee Durrell, spoke to the children in French during a presentation of their work at the Princess Royal Pavilion here at Durrell's headquarters in Jersey.

Dr Lee Durrell spoke of her pleasure at meeting the students: "I was truly impressed at the deep interest these teenagers were expressing in conservation issues and delighted they chose Durrell to study. They showed real ingenuity in raising funds in such a creative way for Durrell."

The pupils have been hard at work creating their own presentations about the Trust and holding open days at their school to raise funds for Durrell. They have made place-mats incorporating images drawn whilst visiting Durrell in Jersey, raising a total of £220 from their sale.

Jacquie Helie: "The pupils were really enthusiastic after I showed them a slide-show of one of my trips to Durrell. One of the other teachers and I decided to offer an optional lunch-break activity to help Durrell save endangered species.

"For the last seven months twenty students have been making posters that explain the biology of different species, such as the black lion tamarin and the Sumatran orangutan. This optional activity has been a real pleasure for everybody involved, and as a biology teacher I liked encouraging my kind and enthusiastic students to take an active part in helping Durrell protect and preserve the biodiversity of the planet."
