Durrell appoints new Chief Executive Officer

31st March 2008

Paul Masterton G Guida

The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Masterton as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Masterton, a Jersey resident, is currently the President of the European arm of a major US printing and communications company, RR Donnelley, and is a highly successful leader, with international experience in North America and Asia.

Jonathan White, Chairman of the Durrell Board of Trustees says: "Whilst Durrell continues to establish itself as a leader in international conservation it has, in recent years, found that it is operating in an ever more competitive environment. The decline in visitors to Jersey combined with the need to raise a substantial sum for the redevelopment of the Jersey site means that Durrell needs someone with very strong business skills at the helm. Paul Masterton is just the sort of person we were looking for and we are delighted that he is joining Durrell. He has an outstanding track record as a business leader and will, I am quite sure, enable that extraordinary group of individuals who make up the staff and management at Durrell to achieve their ambitious goals for biodiversity conservation".

Mr Masterton comments: “It is an honour to be offered the Durrell CEO role and I am delighted to accept the challenge of leading an organisation that is so identified with Jersey and one that is making such a vital impact in saving endangered species around the world. This is an exciting time for Durrell but also an extremely challenging one, with plans for the essential redevelopment of the existing Trinity site and expanding the Trust’s global conservation efforts through its ‘TopSpots’ program. The ‘Durrell Vision’ will be a major capital project with far reaching benefits for Jersey and for conservation worldwide.

"Durrell has a leading international reputation for success in the field of conservation and its pioneering approach is highly regarded. My role as CEO will focus on ensuring that the Trust has a sustainable future and that our highly skilled and passionate employees have the tools and the funding to continue to make a difference”.

Lee Durrell, Honorary Director, points out, “Although Paul has not come from a conservation-related field he has what Gerry used to call a “wide-spectrum mind” and a great empathy for the people he works with. His skills will perfectly complement those of our staff, resulting in a synergy that promises a bright future for Durrell and the animals we are trying to save.”

Mr Masterton moved to Jersey in 2003, from the United States, together with his wife Michele, originally from Trinity, and their two daughters, Danielle and Gemma, who attend Jersey College for Girls.

Mr Masterton will take over the role from Mark Stanley Price who is leaving Durrell after seven years, during which time he significantly contributed to the reputation of Durrell in the international conservation arena. Paul will join the team at Durrell, on a full-time basis, from the 5th May.
